Stock Photo - 10 June 2022, Brandenburg, Grießen: View of the Jänschwalde opencast lignite mine operated by Lausitz Energie Bergbau AG (LEAG). The 2nd Lusatian seam is mined in the Jänschwalde open pit lignite mine. Around eleven million tons of lignite are mined here every year. The F60 conveyor bridge and several bucket wheel excavators have been moving the Lusatian earth for this purpose since 1976. The lignite is burned to generate electricity at the nearby Jänschwalde power plant. The power plant is to be taken off the grid and shut down by 2028 on the way to phasing out coal.
