Thousands of holidaymakers and day guests are counted daily on the island during the summer months. Hiddensee is largely car-free and horse and cart is a widely used means of transport. Hiddensee is about 16.8 kilometres long, at its narrowest point about 250 metres wide and at its widest about 3.7 kilometres wide.
