Stock Photo - 12 July 2021, Saxony, Krostitz: Wildflower grower Karl Koch checks yellow-flowered St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) in a field before harvesting. For the past eight years, the trained agricultural technician has been arable propagating seed from regional near-natural wildflower sites on around 20 hectares of his otherwise conventionally farmed land. Many wildflower varieties are currently harvested from May to November, sometimes by hand or special machinery, and delivered to seed dealers for regional seeding mixes. Wildflowers, which serve as a food source for native insects, are becoming increasingly popular for nature conservation-oriented greening in private gardens, in residential areas of cities or in flowering meadows.
