At the end of April, the European Commission in Brussels announced that the Oderbruch cultural landscape in Brandenburg had been awarded the European Heritage Label. Europe's largest populated polder landscape was honored because the ideals and history of the EU are symbolized here in a special way. The region was created after draining almost 270 years ago, was settled with colonists by Prussian King Frederick II and is preserved as a habitat with an ingenious water system.
