Stock Photo - 13 December 2020, Saxony-Anhalt, Langenstein: In one of the cave dwellings there is still a bed. In Langenstein in the Harz mountains, you are literally waiting for a Hobbit pipe to come around the corner smoking. In the small village near Halberstadt there are still a dozen or so well-preserved cave dwellings, which remind us of the Shire from the two bestsellers ""The Lord of the Rings"" and ""The Hobbit"" by the writer J.R.R. Tolkien. The dwellings were carved into several sandstone rocks with hammer and chisel by peasant families from 1855 onwards. Today, an association takes care of the preservation of the cave dwellings. Photo: Stephan Schulz/dpa-Zentralbild/ZB. - Langenstein/Saxony-Anhalt/Germany
