Stock Photo - 13 December 2020, Saxony-Anhalt, Langenstein: Three red candles are burning in front of the entrance to a cave dwelling. In Langenstein in the Harz mountains, you are literally waiting for a Hobbit pipe to come around the corner. In the small town near Halberstadt there are still a dozen well-preserved cave dwellings, which remind us of the floodplain from the two bestsellers ""The Lord of the Rings"" and ""The Hobbit"" by the writer J.R.R. Tolkien. The dwellings were carved into several sandstone rocks with hammer and chisel by peasant families from 1855 onwards. Today, an association takes care of the preservation of the cave dwellings. Photo: Stephan Schulz/dpa-Zentralbild/ZB. - Langenstein/Saxony-Anhalt/Germany
