During the spring census of Europe's only wild nandu population, helpers now discovered 157 of the flightless large birds on the border to Schleswig-Holstein, as the responsible Schaalsee biosphere reserve announced on Tuesday. Since April of last year, nandu chicks and yearlings may be shot all year round, and adult cocks and hens from November 1 to March 31. Farmers had previously complained that the population, which had grown uncontrollably for years, was causing considerable damage to their fields.
