Long stored and obviously forgotten chemicals caused an explosion in a family house in Alsdorf near Aachen on Thursday. According to the fire brigade, a loud bang and the alarm of a struck smoke detector had alarmed the occupant in the early morning. After the emergency services had evidence of a chemical substance in the air that was atypical of a gas explosion, they triggered a large alarm on suspicion of a chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear hazard.
