Stock Photo - 14 January 2020, Brandenburg, Frankendorf: Pine cones lie in a pile in a seed plantation of the state enterprise Forst Brandenburg. The cones are collected, dried and warmed in a forest seed drying kiln. When heated, the pine cones open, the seeds fall out and can be used to grow new trees. This year, the harvest of 1200 kilograms of cones is planned, probably the target will be exceeded by 200 kilograms of cones by the end of this week. Harvesting can take place on average every two to four years. The plantation, about five hectares in size, was established in 1965, two-year-old shoots had been grafted onto a rootstock at that time, which keeps the trees low and allows the pine cones to be picked from ladders or small lifting platforms.
