Stock Photo - 14 January 2020, Brandenburg, Frankendorf: Simon Reißig (l) and Iven Stock, first-year trainees at the Landesbetrieb Forst Brandenburg, sort the pine cones in a five-hectare seed plantation before weighing them in buckets. The cones are collected, dried and warmed in a forest seed drying kiln. When heated, the pine cones open, the seeds fall out and can be used to grow new trees. This year, it is planned to harvest 1200 kilograms of cones, probably exceeding the target by 200 kilograms of cones by the end of this week. Harvesting can take place on average every two to four years. The plantation had been established in 1965, two-year-old shoots were then grafted onto a base, which keeps the trees low and allows the pine cones to be picked from ladders or small lifting platforms.
