With its dome, the church is one of the most prominent buildings in the city and visible from afar. The old church burned down in 1795 and was rebuilt in 1928 according to the designs of Karl Friedrich Schinkel and his students Ludwig Persius and August Stüler. The sacred building was hit during an air raid towards the end of the Second World War and severely damaged by artillery fire.
