Stock Photo - 16 February 2023, Brandenburg, Müncheberg: Stephan Blank, entomologist (insect researcher), from the Senckenberg German Entomological Institute (SDEI) shows a display case with several stag beetles (Lucanus cervus). One of the greatest treasures of German entomology is stored in Müncheberg: at exactly 18 degrees and constant humidity, around 3.1 million six-legged specimens rest in display cases. Some of them are more than 100 years old, as the collection was started as early as 1886. The topping-out ceremony is scheduled for March 17, 2023. The new building is to be about 25 meters long, 15 meters wide and 11 meters. What makes the new workplace, which will be ready for occupancy from November of this year, unique is a construction method that relies above ground exclusively on a natural, glue-free and solid wood panel construction method. Around 1,000 cubic meters of wood will be used to build the walls, ceilings, stairs and even the elevator shaft. Funded by the state of Brandenburg and the federal government as part of the ""SDEI Müncheberg Innovation Project,"" the building is to be emission-free and energy self-sufficient.
