Stock Photo - 16 May 2023, Saxony-Anhalt, Merseburg: The so-called ""Ottoman Mantle"", presumably from Byzantium, 10th-12th century, is on display in the Imperial Cathedral of Merseburg. The manuscript on display is one of the most precious objects in the cathedral library. May 7 marks the anniversary of Otto I's death. 1050 years after the death of Otto the Great, two exhibitions in Merseburg are dedicated to the emperor in different facets. Both shows open this week. The special exhibition ""The Emperor's Last Journey. Otto the Great, Connector of Worlds and Cultures"" at the Museum of Cultural History opens Wednesday, May 17, 2023. It thematizes the ""Ottonian travel royalty"". In the cathedral, starting on Thursday, the theme is ""Otto the Great, Saint Laurentius and the founding of the diocese of Merseburg - searching for traces in Merseburg's imperial cathedral"". Using documents and manuscripts from the cathedral archives and library, Otto I's special relationship with Merseburg will be illustrated.
