After years of wrangling over the future of the Finow Canal in northeastern Brandenburg, the renovation of the historic locks began on this day. With millions invested by the federal and state governments, water tourism is to be strengthened. The Finow Canal in the Barnim district is considered the oldest navigable artificial waterway in Germany. All twelve of the locks on the 400-year-old waterway, which is a protected historical monument, are to be replaced. Until now, they have been operated by hand crank.
