The platform, which measures around 30 square metres and weighs two tonnes, is covered with gravel and is intended to provide breeding sites for black-headed gulls. The populations of the birds are declining sharply; in the Zwickau district, for example, there is only one other natural population left. The lake was chosen for the artificial breeding island because there used to be a natural population of black-headed gulls here. The floating island was made by a metal construction company in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and cost around 20,000 euros.
