Stock Photo - 17 May 2022, Saxony-Anhalt, Wölkau: At the village church in Wölkau near Bad Dürrenberg, retired master painter Gerald Hartmann stands grouting the natural stone facade. Since his retirement in 2018, the 68-year-old craftsman has been voluntarily restoring the interior of the church, which was built in the 12th-13th centuries and then altered and added to several times. On the initiative of the parish and villagers, it was possible to restore the outer shell of the church, which had not been used since 1996 and was severely damaged by floods to do so, in the years leading up to 2019. Since then, Gerald Hartmann has spent about 3000 hours, among other things, renewed the wooden pews and floor, restored the wooden altar, painted the walls and ceiling painting with 6500 stars.
