The Port of Magdeburg wants to expand the industrial port by 2024 and thus create better conditions to increase the annual handling volume. Up to the canal port with its separation dam, the port can be used regardless of the water level of the Elbe, as access is possible from the Mittelland Canal. The low water lock and the low water lock regulate the water level. However, the industrial port still had direct access to the Elbe and is therefore dependent on the water level. The aim is for the industrial port to be navigable all year round with an unloading depth of around 2.50 meters, regardless of the water level of the Elbe.
