Stock Photo - 18 November 2022, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Neubrandenburg: View of the Fangelturm in the city wall of Neubrandenburg. It was built around 1400 in place of a Wiekhaus on the city wall. Inside the tower, which is about 19 meters high up to the weir plate, there is also a dungeon two and a half meters below street level, which had served as a municipal prison until the 19th century. Hence the name ""Fangelturm"". The 56 three-story buildings, originally inserted at intervals of 30 to 50 meters into the city wall, which was a good seven meters high, once served to defend the city against invaders. Attackers were fought from the upper floor, while weapons and fire-fighting tools were stored below. During the Second World War, most of the houses were destroyed. More than 20 Wiekhäuser are preserved in the city wall and are protected monuments. Photo: Stefan Sauer/dpa. - Neubrandenburg/Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania/Germany
