Stock Photo - 19 August 2020, Saxony-Anhalt, Mammendorf: Michael Buchwitz, Curator for Geosciences at the Museum of Natural History Magdeburg, is standing in the Mammendorf quarry in front of a wall with different layers of earth that have been deposited on top of each other over millions of years. In one of these layers, the scientist finds traces of dinosaurs, which left their imprints in the clayey soil about 260 million years ago. The habitat was relatively dry but the area was regularly flooded by heavy rainfall. The rainwater quickly evaporated again and the loamy soil dried out and petrified. The quarry belongs to the hard stone factory Mammendorf of the Cronenberg stone industry. The scientist has been searching there regularly for dinosaur tracks since 2016.
