Around the year 1143/44, the Guelph ministerial Ludolf von Wenden donated six hectares of land as endowment for a Cistercian monastery to be founded. In 1146 Duke Henry the Lion donated a neighbouring village settlement together with land and inhabitants to the monastery, which was called ""villam qui dicitus Ritdageshvsen"". Thereupon the monastery changed its name and called itself Riddagshausen Monastery after this settlement. Today the area is popular with walkers, especially at weekends.
