By hitting the water, the fish are supposed to swim into the net on Lake Neuschlagsdorf. Three weeks after the start of the carp season, however, the Christmas carp in Mecklenburg are not yet going into the net; only grass carp and pike are wriggling in the fishing gear. The weather is too warm and the fish are still too agile. Piehl, a 65-year-old former deep-sea fisherman, is one of the very few fishermen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania who catch carp in natural lakes using hauling nets.
