Stock Photo - 20 October 2021, Saxony, Chemnitz: Marco Blechschmidt, a student of archaeology, is working on an archaeological excavation in the city centre of Chemnitz. The State Office for Archaeology is hoping to gain new insights into the early development of the city. In the area now being investigated, there is said to have been a pre-urban settlement before the actual city was founded. Since excavation began in mid-September, the archaeologists have secured findings from the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as remains of pre-war buildings, cellars and foundation walls of buildings destroyed during the war. The work is expected to last until the end of December 2021. Photo: Hendrik Schmidt/dpa-Zentralbild/ZB. - Chemnitz/Saxony/Germany
