Stock Photo - 20 October 2023, Saxony, Chemnitz: Items that an inmate of the former Stasi prison on the Kaßberg had procured for his planned escape from the GDR are on display in the permanent exhibition. The former prison played an important role in the GDR as a hub for the ransom of political prisoners to the Federal Republic and was therefore also considered by many to be the ""gateway to freedom"". This is commemorated by the new memorial, which has now been inaugurated in a former prison wing of the building. Other chapters in the history of the complex and the lives of those once imprisoned there are also addressed. The result is a place of remembrance for coming to terms with the injustice and paying tribute to the victims. The memorial will also focus on education and encounters.
