The former prison played an important role in the GDR as a hub for the release of political prisoners to the Federal Republic and was therefore also considered by many to be the ""gateway to freedom."" This is commemorated by the new memorial, which has now been inaugurated in a former prison wing of the building. Other chapters in the history of the complex and the lives of those once imprisoned there are also addressed. The result is a place of remembrance for coming to terms with the injustice and paying tribute to the victims. The memorial will also focus on education and encounters.
