Stock Photo - 21 April 2023, Saxony, Annaberg-Buchholz: High-altitude rescuers from various fire departments in Saxony train in the roof of St. Catherine's Church in Annaberg-Buchholz at the First Aid in Ropes station. The training day around the special unit of the fire departments combines theory and practice for extreme situations. Around 50 participants have registered for the event, including representatives of the mountain rescue service. Saxony's high-altitude rescuers face new challenges in their work in light of recent natural events. The flood disaster in the Ahr Valley, for example, showed that rescuing people from the air will become more important in the future. To become height rescuers, firefighters must complete an 80-hour basic training course and continue their training for 72 hours every year thereafter. In Annaberg-Buchholz, the fire department has set up a special training room under the roof of St. Catherine's Church for rescuing people from chairlifts.
