Stock Photo - 21 October 2021, Saxony-Anhalt, Halle (Saale): Christopher Meyer looks at a historical hand washing vessel in the State Museum of Archaeology in Halle/Saale. Meyer discovered the approximately 800-year-old bronze vessel in the shape of a horse in July 2021 in Großdemsin (Jerichower Land district) while out walking. The so-called aquamanile is a distinct rarity and one of the earliest known casting vessels of its kind in Germany. The vessel was a luxury object in the high Middle Ages and was used for pouring water between 1150 and 1250. These pieces were used, for example, for liturgical hand washing during church services. Due to its significance, the surprise find will be included in the new rooms of the permanent exhibition of the State Museum of Prehistory. The vessel will be on display here from 5 November 2021.
