Stock Photo - 21 September 2023, Saxony, Leipzig: In the new Romanian Orthodox Church ""St. George"" a man prepares a lime-sand plaster, which mixed with hemp felt is needed as a base for fresco painting. At present, the church painter Lector Dr. Mihai Coman, lecturer in church painting at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology of the University of Bucharest, and three other church painters are painting the first frescoes on the vaulted roof of the church, according to a technique rarely used in Germany. According to a painting technique that has its origins in antiquity, up to seven layers of lime sand must be applied, which, mixed with horsehair or hemp felt, should guarantee that the frescoes will last for centuries. The individual motifs of the overall fresco are each worked on in one day in a single pass on the damp substrate. The complex painting of the church, for which the existing building in the style of a Romanesque basilica has been rebuilt since the 19th century, is scheduled to be completed in 2026.
