The old Hanseatic city of Braunschweig had already maintained a stacking and transhipment point on the Oker around 1000, and from 1227 there was documentary evidence of regular shipping traffic between Braunschweig and Bremen, which had to be abandoned again in 1764 due to increasing silting up of the rivers. It was not until the construction of the Mittelland Canal, which began in 1906, that the prospect of a connection to maritime trade re-emerged. In 1926 the city council decided to build a harbour.
