Stock Photo - 23 July 2021, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Rostock: Wolfgang Schareck, Rector of the University of Rostock, puts a flower for a woman behind the inaugurated memorial plaque for Arno Esch, who was executed by the Soviet regime 70 years ago. The student Esch was arrested in 1949 together with friends by the Soviet secret police, sentenced to death for alleged espionage and brought to Moscow. There he was shot on 24.07.1951. It was not until the early 1990s that Esch and two comrades-in-arms were rehabilitated and their execution declared unjust.
