Tourism between the GDR, CSSR and Poland"" at the Documentation Center for Everyday Culture of the GDR. The ""Iron Curtain"" ran through Europe during the Cold War, but the borders between the socialist ""friendship countries"" were also a political issue and passable only to a limited extent. In the 1960s, they became somewhat more permeable, but 1972 marked a real breakthrough: in the GDR, CCSR and Poland, regulations came into force that allowed people to cross each other's borders without passports or visas. Millions of people took advantage of this already in the first year. They took vacation trips, day trips or shopping trips to the neighboring countries.
