Stock Photo - 24 May 2022, Saxony-Anhalt, Köthen: Next to the epitaph (l) with the founder's picture of Princess Gisela Agnes by the Prussian court painter Antoine Pesne stands the late Gothic high altar in the Protestant church of St. Agnus in Köthen. The art-historically valuable altar with neo-Gothic elements was lavishly restored and is now back in its original place in the renovated church. The work originates from a Central German workshop and dates back to around 1510. Presumably the altar originally stood in the Merseburg Cathedral and then came to Köthen. Depicted is the adoration of the Eucharist as well as scenes from the Old Testament, which are also related to the Lord's Supper. The church was built between 1694 and 1699 at the behest of Princess Gisela Agnes of Anhalt-Köthen. The Baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach was a member of the congregation during his time as Köthen court kapellmeister (1717-1723). Photo: Hendrik Schmidt/dpa. - Köthen/Saxony-Anhalt/Germany
