Cracks in the canal embankment between Lakes Markkleeberg and Störmthal require immediate safety measures. The 850-metre-long Störmthal Canal connects the two lakes - the affected lock compensates for the difference of four metres in the water levels of the two bodies of water. According to experts, a complete collapse would result in widespread flooding - in the northern urban areas from Markkleeberg to Leipzig. Now diving, surfing, sailing and swimming as well as all boating on the lakes are prohibited until the end of May.
