Stock Photo - 28 October 2021, Saxony, Leipzig: Modernised prefabricated buildings between green spaces characterise the image of the Grünau residential area in the west of Leipzig. The foundation stone for the residential area was laid 45 years ago and the first turnkey apartment was handed over on 3 November 1977. The large housing estate Grünau was built between 1976 and 1989 on the western outskirts of Leipzig and, with eight residential complexes, is the largest prefabricated housing area in the city. Until the end of the GDR, more than 85,000 people lived here. After reunification, a sharp loss of inhabitants led to a high vacancy rate of apartments as well as infrastructure and utility facilities. Today, Leipzig-Grünau is home to almost 45,000 people.
