The folk festival originated 100 years ago in the culture of slaves. According to oral tales, the slaves used to celebrate because they were not allowed to participate in the feast in honour of the Virgin of the Penha. Many of them, who did not want to be recognized, wore masks. Others even covered themselves with straw or dry leaves from the banana tree. Thus the fantasy figure ""Joao Bannaneira"" (Hans Bananengewächs) was created. Over time, this figure also took part in the traditional celebration.
