A private company under the sponsorship of the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism organised the 'Kamal el-Dine memorial expedition' which took place between 14 and 16 March 2014. The objectives of the expedition were to promote ecological desert tourism and to commeorate Prince Kamal el Dine Hussein, who discovered and explored the Gilf Kebir plateau in the 1920s. Kamal el Dine was the only eligible heir to the throne in Egyptian history to give up his rights to the throne of his own free will in order to dedicate himself to exploring the Egyptian Western desert, as some sources claim. The memorial exhibition covered destinations in the Egyptian border area to Lybia and Sudan. This region became better-known by the award-winning movie 'The English Patient'.
