'Protection Squadron'), ran the concentration and death camp between 1940 and 1945. Incoming deportees were selected into different groups right after they arrived in Birkenau. The weak and sick people were sometimes directly send into to gas chambers without even registering them. Approximately 1.1 to 1.5 million people, most of them Jewish, have been killed in the camp and its satellites.
