In March 2014, Egypt's Ministry of Tourism sponsored the Kamal El Din's Expedition, a commemorative scientific research tour to the western desert in Egypt. The aim of the tour was advocate environmentally sustainable desert tourism and to commemorate Egyptian Prince Kamal El Din Hussein, who discovered the Gilf Kebir Plateau during his exhibition to the Western Desert of Egypt in the 1920s. Kamal El Din Hussein was the only Egyptian claimant to the Egyptian throne who voluntarily renounced his claim to focus on the exploration of the western desert with its archeological treasures.
