In a ruling that could shift the balance of power in the smartphone chip business, a U.S. court has imposed conditions on leading supplier Qualcomm. The California judge prohibited Qualcomm, among other things, from making chip shipments conditional upon the acquisition of a separate patent license. In addition, Qualcomm may not enter into exclusive agreements for chip supplies and must make its patents available to competitors for technologies based on technical standards on fair terms and without discrimination.
