Stock Photo - In advance of the official start of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on August 5th, adidas and Stella McCartney unveil the Team GB Opening Ceremony looks. For the first time Stella McCartney has designed the Opening Ceremony outfits to be worn by Team GB athletes at the official opening of Rio 2016 on 5th August. The designs are in addition to the full Team GB and Paralympics GB performance kit which were revealed in April this year. The designer’s assignment for the Rio 2016 Games is a follow up to her successful debut as Team GB and Paralympics GB creative director at London 2012. The Opening Ceremony looks are inspired by the designer’s signature silhouettes, with a focus on tailoring across both the men’s and women’s outfits. The newly commissioned coat of arms, which plays an important design role in the performance kit, will also feature as classic embroidery on a number of styles and intricately on metal belt buckles, contrasting a traditional icon with the 21st century look and feel of the kit. For women, the outfit is comprised of an elegant yet sporty navy blue dress, which incorporates high performance perforated fabrics for an effortlessly athletic feel. The patriotic look is topped off with a white tailored jacket and statement gold buckle. Male athletes will also take on tailoring in a navy blue pea coat-inspired jacket, with military inspired detailing. Underneath, a smart pair of white shorts is paired with a crisp blue poplin shirt featuring a white coat of arms embroidered on the breast pocket that ties back to the sporting theme. The looks combine classic tailoring and traditional finishes with modern silhouettes and hi-tech performance fabrics to create a truly unique and unified range for Team GB athletes to take the first step on their Olympic journeys.
