In this day the Marian column was blessed by Prague Archbishop Cardinal Dominik Duka. The Virgin Mary Column was erected in Old Town Square in 1650 and consecrated two years later as a symbol of the Catholic Church's victory in the Czech Lands. The column was pulled down by an angry mob in November 1918 after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian (Habsburg) Monarchy and the establishment of independent Czechoslovakia.
