Stock Photo - PRODUCTION - 04 May 2023, Saxony, Leipzig: At the Leipzig-based startup company Greenhub Solutions GmbH, engineer-ecologist and mechanical engineer Kay Plat pollinates the female blossom of a watermelon by hand in a vertical indoor cultivation system. In the compact modular systems with up to three levels, managing director Alexander Jaworski and Kay Plat grow various types of lettuce, watermelon, basil, several types of herbs and fruit vegetables in a short time at 15-25 degrees Celsius. Their water and nutrient supply and optimal growth conditions are monitored by an intelligent, data-controlled system. Among other things, light spectra in eight color tones, the climate and the nutrient solutions in the water, which are individually adjusted to the different growth phases, are tested. The employees of the young company, who are supported by the European GEC program, want to counteract the scarcity of resources and contribute to food security with weather-independent indoor plant cultivation and a needs-based water and nutrient supply for food production.
