Stock Photo - PRODUCTION - 14 June 2023, Saxony, Heinersgrün: View from the last GDR border tower on Saxon soil in Heinersgrün in the direction of the Bavarian border. The border tower in Heinersgrün, which went into operation in 1978, was a so-called command post. From here, the daily work in the border sections was organized. Searchlights were used to illuminate the area around the towers. The Border Command South, III Border Battalion, Border Regiment (GR) -10 Plauen ""Ernst Grube"" was stationed here. The renovation of the tower has just been completed. At a cost of 278,000 euros, it will in future make a contribution to historical reappraisal as one of the last relics of GDR border security between Saxony and Bavaria. The renovated tower can be visited in the future as part of seminars on the Mödlareuth Museum. On historic anniversaries, the tower will be open all day. An exact opening day has not yet been determined. (to dpa ""Stone witness of the Iron Curtain: Border tower becomes place of remembrance"") Photo: Hendrik Schmidt/dpa. - Heinersgrün/Saxony/Germany
