Stock Photo - PRODUCTION - 21 June 2022, Saxony-Anhalt, Naumburg: Holger Rode, archaeologist from the Saxony-Anhalt State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and Archaeology, and his colleagues uncover wall remains and tombs at Naumburg Cathedral. Archaeologists dig in Naumburg Cathedral Square in search of the northern cloister. So far, twenty tombs and various meter-long wall remains have been uncovered. In the Middle Ages, parts of buildings at the cathedral were demolished and the area was used as a cemetery. The excavation work will continue until the end of August in preparation for the planned redesign of the cathedral square. The area has never been investigated archaeologically before. Naumburg Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul is an important cultural monument from the time of the European High Middle Ages and has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2018.
