The mostly scavenging animal weighs up to 50 kilograms and is the only hyena species whose fur is hardly patterned or streaked. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park was created in 1999 by merging the South African Kalahari-Gemsbok National Park and the Gemsbok National Park in Botswana and is a cross-border nature reserve in the Kalahari Desert with an area of around 38,000 square kilometers.
