Stock Photo - The Prague City Council today, April 24, 2018, approved the plan to pull down the 90-year-old Liben Bridge that crosses the Vltava (Moldau) River in the northern part of the city due to its poor technical condition and to enable its replacement with a new bridge. The project still requires consent of the City Assembly, which is to vote on it on Thursday. The Liben Bridge, with bustling car and tram traffic, dates back to 1928 and has never been repaired. Its technical condition required some provisional maintenance measures that closed the bridge for six weeks earlier this year. The authors of the Liben Bridge are architect Pavel Janak (1882-1956), a significant representative of the Czech inter-war architecture, and bridge constructor Frantisek Mencl (1879-1960). It bears elements of the cubistic style. The Liben Bridge connects the Holesovice neighbourhood on the left bank of the Vltava with Liben on the right bank. Its construction started in 1924 and it was opened on October 29, 1928 on the 10th anniversary of the birth of Czechoslovakia. The bridge construction is 370 metres long, and its overall length including the connecting roads is 780 metres. Originally, it was the longest of Prague's bridges designated for road traffic. It is 21 metres wide. (CTK Photo/Petr Salek)
