The area was formed essentially during the last ice age. More than two thirds of the natural parks are mixed forests. Characteristic for the Schlaubetal is the richness of lakes and chains of lakes from the ice age. The Schlaubetal hiking trail has been awarded with the 'Qualitaetsweg Wanderbares Deutschland' (Wanderbares Deutschland premium trail).
