Stock Photo - 1966 - Finland show the world how to bath: sauna becomes popular in other capitals: For generations the hardy Finns - and many Norwegians - have built their little homes around the Sauna. In country districts, the lake nearby acts as the cold shower into which the men, women and children run and jump after enduring terrific steam temperatures caused through pouring hot water onto certain types of lake stones. During this the skin is toned up by slapping it, beating it with birch twigs, or just using a scrubber. At last, the world imitate. in London, Sauna has arrived. It is used in America by the Forces. Finnish athletes travelling abroad for meeting demand their sauna. Finnish diplomats overseas ant it. and so have it they shall and the 'natives' can enjoy it themselves. In Kensington, a Norwegian has started a modern- city type Sauna with a cold showers in place of lake water, and tiles, plumbing and mechanization instead of the primitive Saunas. Already hundreds go regularly. Among them are many people from stage shows who work strange hours and use lots of make-up. It keeps them young, beautiful and their weight down. x These pictures show Pauline Johnson, 24, and Gay Clark, who appear in 'Cockles and Champagne' enjoying their now regular visit to Sauna. It costs but five shillings, and takes an hour. One thing we forgot to mention. Contrary to Finn-fashion: in London there are separate times for ladies and gentlemen.
