The Royal Borough of Windsor in Coronation Year: Always a 'must' on the list of places for the tourist to visit, Windsor this year is expecting even more visitors than usual. although built as a stronghold by William the Conqueror in 1070, Windsor Castle has for many years been the traditional home of the Sovereign and each succeeding sovereign has added something to the glories of the ancient Castle. Twice the Castle has been besieged, the last time just before King John signed the Magna Carta at nearby Runnymede. The first Elizabeth re-constructed the North Terrace and walked there every day. The decapitated corpse of King Charles was 'lost' there. King Charles II laid out the famous Long Walk. Windsor owes much to King George III, for all over the town are fine examples of the splendid building of his era. Queen Victoria who statue stands at the bottom of Castle Hill, spent most of the years of her widowhood there. Many of the shops in Windsor have the 'By Appointment' sign hanging over their doors and the sovereign very often shops personally in the town. (Credit Image: © Keystone Pictures USA/ZUMAPRESS.com)
