The Statue was presented to Greenwich by Admiral Sir John Jennings who became Governor in 1720, in gratitude for the way in which the King had stoutly refuted the charge that Jennings had connives at the escape of the Pretender. The statue by Michael Rysbrack and is said to be sculptured in marble taken from a French ship by Sir George Rooke, under whom Jennings had served at the capture of Gibraltar.
