Until 1995 it was called the Heysel Stadium and was converted to a multi-function arena in the mid-1990s. It is Belgium's largest stadium, with around 50,000 seats, and was one of the stadiums used for the Euro 2000 championships. The Memorial Van Damme athletics event, which is part of the IAAF Diamond League, has also been held here since 1977. On 29 May 1985, the Heysel Stadium was the site of an incident in which 39 people died and more than 400 were seriously injured before kick-off in the 1985 European Cup Final between Juventus Turin and Liverpool FC. - NO WIRE SERVICE - Photo: Sascha Steinach/dpa-Zentralbild/dpa | usage worldwide. - Brussels/Belgium
